Charles Walller, Communiqué,
2009(detail) |
Waller takes his inspiration from objets trouvés and antique materials he collects. Indeed, much of this current body of work was inspired by the discovery of years of World War II love letters, written by an American sailor and the young English woman who became his wife. Other pieces were created using 19th century wooden gear forms, dolls from a defunct factory in Lyons, France, and treasures from the artist’s collection. Individual works have been assembled from these various and reconfigured elements, and often amplified by Waller’s exquisite drawing. The strong visual impact of these pieces is something we have come to expect from Waller, every bit as much as his signature wit. In addition these evocative works also manage to convey a fresh comment on the strength as well as the fragility of human experience. The exhibition will be on view through July 13.
